High School Track & Field Handbook
- Membership in RVSA Track & Field is available to all RVSD schools with students in grades 9 to 12.
- Other schools within the RVSD geographic area participate as one team in order to qualify for the South Central Zone competition.

- Eligibility rules are those set forth in the ASAA Handbook.
- The categories for participation are:
- Juvenile: Grade 9 and under 17 as of September 1
- Junior: Under 16 as of September 1
- Intermediate: Under 17 as of September 1
- Senior: Under 19 as of September 1
- To qualify for the Grade 9 Zone Championship meet athletes must place first or second at the Divisional Championship meet and first in the relay event.
- To qualify for the High School Zone Championship meet athletes must place first or second at the Divisional Championship meet.
- In the event that the qualified athletes can not attend Zones, the following rule applies: The next highest qualified athlete is contacted by the sports coordinator until one is available to attend.

- RVSA Track & Field holds two Coaches’ Organizational meetings:
- Pre-season at the end of April.
- Post-season at the beginning June.
- A track & field commissioner is approved by the RVSA governing body for a two-year term.
- Participation in RVSA Track and Field includes the Divisional Championship meet.
- Participating schools are assigned as officials by the sports coordinator.
- The sports coordinator is responsible for submitting RVSA team to the Zone host, sending a cheque for all entries with one of the coaches, and invoicing each school for its participation at the Zone level.

Rules and Regulations |
- All events are governed according to International Amateur Athletics Federation rules, with modifications according to the ASAA Handbook.
- Aggregate points are based on the following scores:
- First place:7 points
- Second place: 5 points
- Third place: 4 points
- Fourth place: 3 points
- Fifth place: 2 points
- Sixth place: 1 point

Facilities and Equipment |
- The Divisional Championship meet is held at a Calgary facility, one week prior to the Zone Championship meet.
- Due to the large number of participating schools, it is difficult to provide lockable change rooms for all teams. Athletes are asked to come in their track clothes and leave valuables with their coach/supervisor while participating in an event.
- All schools are asked to assist in clean up before the relay races take place. Garbage bags are supplied.
- The sports coordinator arranges for a sports therapist to be on site to administer first aid.

- Coaches are responsible for the supervision of their teams. All athletes must maintain proper behaviour at all times. Athletes are called to events twice and then scratched it they do not appear. Coaches are asked to give their team approximate times for events if available.
- Coaches are asked to make sure their team stays out of the middle of the track.

Officials and Their Duties |
- Each school is asked to supply officials for the track meet. Officials may be coaches, teachers, or any other responsible adult. Schools are asked to supply a number of officials in proportion to the size of their school and/or track team.
- The track marshal, starter and head timer positions should be held by people with experience.
- The athlete placing first in his/her field event is responsible for taking the results sheet to the results table/truck.

Code of Conduct |
All athletes and parents must sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Athletes and Spectators prior to participating in any exhibition or RVSA event. Coaches must also sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Coaches. Failure to complete the form results in that participant being disqualified from play and may result in his/her team forfeiting points gained while participating with an ineligible participant.

Team Cancellation Procedures |
Teams are allowed to register two athletes and an alternate per event. If an athlete is unable to attend an event, only the registered alternate may take his/her place.

Grievances and Disciplinary Procedures |
- All grievances are dealt with according to the RVSA Appeal Policy - RVSA By-Laws Article XII.
- During the Divisional Championship meet, the protest committee consists of the commissioner, sports coordinator and a coach elected at the pre season meeting. All protests must be initiated by the coach within 30 minutes of the completion of the event.

- The RVSD sponsors awards for the Divisional Championship meet. They include the following
- First through sixth-place ribbons for all fourteen events.
- First-place medallions for RVSA individual aggregate winners in all categories (four events for aggregate).
- Divisional Championship banner for the school with the highest aggregate total points.
- Individual events points are based on the following
- First place: 7 points
- Second place: 5 points
- Third place: 4 point
- Fourth place: 3 points
- Fifth place: 2 points
- Sixth place: 1 point
- Relay points are worth double the individual events points for the school aggregate. Relay runners are awarded one quarter of the relay points toward their individual aggregate total:
- First place: 2 points
- Second place: 1 point
- Third place: 1 point
- Fourth, fifth and sixth place: 0 points
