Article I Membership

Membership in RVSA Track and Field is available to all RVSD schools with students in grades 7 to 8.

Article II Eligibility
  1. Eligibility rules are those set forth RVSA By-Laws, Article II.
  2. The categories for participation are:
    1. Grade 7
    2. Grade 8
    3. All events with the exception of javelin, pole vault and 4 x 400m relay.

Article III Organization
  1. Participating schools are required to send one representative (athletic director) to the fall and spring middle school sports meetings.
  2. A track & field commissioner is approved by the RVSA governing body for a two-year term.
  3. The Divisional Championship meet is held on the first Thursday in October from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  4. Participation in RVSA Track and Field includes the Divisional Championship meet.
  5. Participating schools are assigned as officials by the sports coordinator.
  6. All registrations must be submitted to the sports coordinator by the assigned deadline.

Article IV Rules and Regulations
  1. All events are governed according to International Amateur Athletics Federation Rules. The weights and measurements used at the Divisional Championship meet are included in individual event rules.
  2. Tie-breaking procedures are also listed with individual event rules, along with procedures for officiating each event.

Article V Facilities and Equipment
  1. The Divisional Championship meet is held at Glenmore Athletic Park in Calgary.
  2. Due to the large number of participating schools, it is difficult to provide lockable change rooms for all teams. Players are asked to arrive in track clothes and leave valuables with their coach/supervisor while participating in an event.
  3. All schools are asked to assist in clean up before the relay races take place.
  4. The sports coordinator arranges for a sports therapist to be on site to administer first aid.

Article VI Supervision
  1. Coaches are responsible for the supervision of their teams. All athletes must maintain proper behaviour at all times. Athletes are called to their event twice and then scratched if they do not appear. Coaches are asked to give their team approximate times for events if available.
  2. At lunch, coaches are asked to make sure that garbage is put into the proper receptacles.
  3. Coaches are asked to make sure their teams stay out of the middle of the track.
  4. The RVSD covers the cost of substitute teachers for:
    1. The Track and Field commissioner.
    2. One coach for every 30 students per school up to a maximum of four coaches per school.

Article VII Officials and Their Duties
  1. Each school is asked to supply officials for the track meets. Officials may be coaches, teachers, or any other responsible adult. Schools are asked to supply a number of officials in proportion to the size of their school and/or their track team.
  2. The athlete placing first in his/her field event must run the results to the results table.
  3. The track marshall, starter, and head timer positions should be held by people with experience.

Article VIII Code of Conduct

All athletes and parents must sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Athletes and Spectators prior to participating in any exhibition or RVSA event. Coaches must also sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Coaches. Failure to complete the form results in that participant being disqualified from play and may result in his/her team forfeiting points gained while participating with an ineligible participant.

Article IX Team Cancellation Procedures

Schools can register two athletes in each entry plus one alternate in every event other than the relay which is one entrant per age and gender. In the event that a registered athlete cannot participate in an event, only the registered alternate may participate in his/her place.

Article X Grievances and Disciplinary Procedures
  1. All grievances are dealt with according to the RVSA Appeal Policy - RVSA By-Laws Article XII.
  2. Protests during the event must be filed by the school coach to the commissioner. The protest committee consists of the commissioner, sports coordinator and a coach elected at the pre-season meeting. All protests must be initiated within 30 minutes of the completion of an event.

Article XI Awards
  1. The RVSD sponsors awards for the Divisional Championship meet. They include the following:
    1. First through sixth-place ribbons for all categories.
    2. Divisional Championship banner for the school with the highest aggregate points.
    3. Gold medals for the grade 7 and 8 boy and girl with the highest individual aggregate points.
  2. Points are awarded for the following:
    1. First: 7 points
    2. Second: 5 points
    3. Third: 4 points
    4. Fourth: 3 points
    5. Fifth: 2 points
    6. Sixth: 1 point
  3. Points for the relay are:
    1. First: 14 points
    2. Second: 10 points
    3. Third: 8 points
    4. Fourth: 6 points
    5. Fifth: 4 points
    6. Sixth: 2 points
    7. Relay runners are awarded one quarter of the relay points toward their individual aggregate total.
