Grade 6 Basketball Rules at a Glance
All games are played according to FIBA (Federation Internationale de Basketball) rules. The following Rules at a Glance incorporate FIBA rules with our own Rocky View rule modifications.
- Schools will play with the narrow key.
- Games consist of two 12-minute halves (running time) with a one-minute half time. Each team is allowed a five-minute warm up before the start of each game.
- Teams gaining posession defensively are allowed free progression to centre. The former offensive team must retreat to its defensive are and wait for the ball to be brought to centre before coverage can occur.
- Should a player violate the press rule and gain possession of the ball, the referee blows the whistle, awards the ball to the offensive team and cautions the offender. To avoid excessive time loss, if a player defends another player prior to the centre line, the referee cautions the defensive player while play continues.
- Once possession has been established after a rebound, the new defensive team may not intercept a pass until the ball has crossed the centre line. In the event that a ball is purposely or inadvertently interceptied, the referee blows the play dead and the ball is inbounded on the side line.
- Ten foot baskets are used by both boys and girls.
- The foul line is four feet closer to the basket, marked with tape .
- A size 6 ball is used .
- Five seconds in the key is called.
- A running score is sufficient.
- Uniforms should be similiar in colour for the tops and are to be numbered. Schools have no jersey restrictions with regard to numbering or undershirts.
