Article I Membership
  1. Membership in the RVSA Badminton league is available to all RVSD schools with students in grades 9 to 12.
  2. Other schools within the Rocky View geographic area participate as one team in order to qualify for the South Central Zone competition.

Article II Eligibility
  1. Eligibility rules are those set forth in the ASAA Handbook.
  2. The categories for participation are:
    1. Juvenile: Under 17 as of September 1 and no higher than Grade 9 .
    2. Junior: Under 16 as of September 1.
    3. Intermediate: Under 17 as of September 1.
    4. Senior: Under 19 as of September 1.
  3. To qualify for the Grade 9 Zone Championship tournament, singles and teams must place first or second in the Divisional Championship tournament.
  4. To qualify for the High School Zone Championship tournament, singles and teams must place first or second in the Divisional Championship tournament.
  5. In the event that the qualified athletes cannot attend Zones, the following rules apply:
    1. Singles: The next highest placed athlete replaces the player.
    2. Doubles: If both members of a team are unable to attend, the next highest placed team from the Divisional Championship tournament replaces the team. If one member of a team cannot attend due to illness or other unexpected extenuating circumstances, any eligible member of the student body not already in the Zone Championship tournament may replace that player. Foreseeable circumstances (hockey games, holidays) are not deemed acceptable and in such cases, the next highest placed team replaces the team. In all cases, the badminton commissioner and the sports coordinator must be contacted.

Article III Organization
  1. The RVSA Badminton league holds a Coaches' Organizational pre-season meeting at the end of March.
  2. A badminton commissioner is approved by the RVSA governing body for a two-year term.
  3. Categories are arranged as follows:
    1. Events with eight or more competitors are divided into two pools with play-offs between the top two in each pool.
    2. Events with less than eight competitors play one round robin with the top two players playing again to determine first and second place. Third to seventh place rankings are based on the number of wins in the round robin.
  4. Participation in the RVSA Badminton league includes the Divisional Championship tournament.
  5. The sports coordinator puts together the drawmaster package and assigns schools for events.
  6. The sports coordinator is responsible for submitting RVSA teams to the Zone host and sends a cheque for all entries with one of the coaches. The sports coordinator then invoices each school for its participation at the Zone level.

Article IV Rules and Regulations
  1. All games are played according to Canadian Badminton Association rules with the following exception: All categories score to 15.
  2. Aggregate points are based on the following scores:
    1. First place: 3 points
    2. Second place: 2 points
    3. Third place: 1 point
  3. The following dress code is in effect during all tournaments:
    1. Clean running shoes.
    2. White or school-issued, short sleeved, t-shirt.
    3. Plain-coloured or school-issued shorts - no cut offs, sweat pants, rugby pants etc.
    4. Players not dressed in appropriate clothing are denied the privilege of going on the court until acceptable clothing is worn. Drawmasters will not hold up the schedule waiting for a player to change clothing.
  4. In the event of a tie, the following tie breaking procedures are used to determine the higher standing:
    1. If two teams are tied for first, the match between the two teams breaks the tie.
    2. If two teams are tied for second, the match between the two teams breaks the tie.
    3. If three teams are tied for first, the teams will be ranked 1, 2, 3 based on points won minus points lost. The teams ranked 2 and 3 will then play one game to 21 to determine second place.
    4. If three teams are tied for second the teams will be ranked 1, 2, 3  based on points won minus points lost. The teams ranked 2 and 3 will play one game to 21 to determine who will play the team ranked first one game to 21. The winner of that game will be the second place team.

Article V Facilities and Equipment
  1. Shuttles used at the Divisional Championship tournament are the yellow fight, green band, Yonex Mavis 300 (as per ASAA and South Central Zone tournaments).
  2. The Divisional Championship tournament is held in Airdrie at a minimum of four schools.
  3. Due to the large number of participating schools, it is difficult to provide lockable change rooms for all teams. Players are asked to leave valuables with their coach/supervisor while on the court.
  4. Host schools are requested to ensure adequate nets, drawmaster tables, and players' benches for the tournament. If there are concerns, notify the sports coordinator.

Article VI Drawmasters and Their Duties
  1. A detailed list of duties can be found in the Drawmaster's Checklist.
  2. A judge is provided by the drawmaster at the request of the players.

Article VII Code of Conduct

All athletes and parents must sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Athletes and Spectators prior to participating in any exhibition or RVSA event. Coaches must also sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Coaches. Failure to complete the form results in that participant being disqualified from play and may result in his/her team forfeiting points gained while participating with an ineligible participant.

Article VIII Team Cancellation Procedures

Once a school has sent in its registration, minor changes can be made up to the day prior to the tournament. These changes should be done by email to the sports coordinator.

Article IX Grievances and Disciplinary Procedures

All grievances are dealt with according to the RVSA Appeal Policy - RVSA By-Laws Article XII.

Article X Awards

The RVSD sponsors awards for the Divisional Championship tournament. They include the following:

  1. First, second and third-place medallions for all categories.
  2. Divisional Championship trophy for highest aggregate points.
  3. Divisional Championship banner for highest aggregate total.
