Warm up period
As you take attendance, ask teams, should they place in the top two, if they plan on attending Zone Championships. |

Confirm attendance
8:45 am |
Gather athletes. If there are teams missing from a category, then use the appropriate template (attached) for the number of teams present in each classification. You must make up a new draw for that category using the players that are in attendance. If you have fewer than eight teams they must remain in one pool. Eight teams and over are divided evenly into Pool A and Pool B.
It is imperative that coaches get athletes to the gym on time. If a new draw is made and the athlete arrives late, they may have to forfeit their chance to play that day. Coaches should anticipate poor weather, drop off times, etc.
Once the pools have been finalized, the drawmaster should make a game list. To avoid delays, take one game from each pool in succession to make the game list (i.e. one game from the juvenile category, then a game from the junior, then a game from the intermediate, etc.) The game list should be copied onto large paper and taped to the wall next to the on deck area.
The floor coordinator or co-drawmaster is to direct the warmup: only four athletes per court, rotating new athletes in every five minutes. |

Organize on-deck area
9:00 am |
Choose a location next to the drawmaster table for the next 4 - 6 games waiting in line. Athletes should be sitting in order of play and with their opponents. As a court becomes available, the next teams in line will promptly take the court. The less time a court sits idle, the quicker the draw will be complete. |

Pre-tournament meeting
9:00 am |
Read the following information to athletes and coaches.
- There is no warm up. Games are to start immediately. To decide serve, players hit a shuttle into the air. The person the shuttle lands facing chooses: to serve, not to serve and side of court to play on.
- All round robin games are the first team to 21 points. Teams do not need to win by two points in round robin play.
- At the completion of the game, and after handshake, both teams must report to the drawmaster’s table to ensure the results are recorded accurately. Remember, tie-breaking procedures may come down to points made. Accuracy of points scored in all games is important.
- The honour system is used for officiating games. It is proper etiquette for a team to make line calls on its side of the court. If a team is unsure players may ask their opponents. There is to be no arguing. Play a let for any call in which there is a disagreement.
- Watch for proper serve. Remember that the racquet head must be below the bottom of the rib cage on contact of the shuttle. The racquet shaft must also be pointed in a downward direction from the grip to the racquet head. If a team feels there is an illegal server, notify the drawmaster so he/she can send a supervisor/coach to observe the serve and make a ruling.
- Please avoid bothering the drawmaster with questions like “When do we play next?” There is a lot of down time in badminton. Wait patiently and your turn will come. Avoid leaving the area for long periods of time. You must be in the on-deck area when your game is called. As the draw concludes the drawmaster announces who qualifies as soon as possible.
- Play-off matches are the best of three games. Teams must win by two points. If play continues to 29 points, the first team to get 30 points wins.
- Division Championship medallions are awarded upon completion of play-off games.

Record scores |
Record the scores on the record sheets provided. Each box should have a ‘W’ for a win and an ‘ L’ for a loss and the score of the game. If there is a forfeit, it should be noted as such and if scores are required to break a tie, the score will be 21 to 0. |

Tabulate results |
At the completion of round robin play in each pool, count the number of wins for each team. The team with the most wins is first in its pool. If there are two pools the first place team plays the second place team from the other pool. |

Tie-breaking procedures |
Two way ties: All two way ties for first and second place in the round robin will be determined by the result of the match between the two tied players (teams).
Three way ties: In a 3 way tie for first place, the teams will be ranked 1, 2, and 3 based on total points won minus total points lost in the round robin play.
For example, in a round robin of 7 teams, if the results are as follows:

Teams A, B, and C each have 4 wins and 2 losses. Team D has 3 wins and 3 losses. Teams E, F, and G have 2 wins and 4 losses. There is a 3 way tie for first place between teams A, B, and C. To rank these three teams, add their total points won minus their total points lost. For example:
Team A Total Points Won: 21 + 21 + 21 + 21 + 17 + 14 = 115
Team A Total Points Lost: 10 + 18 + 20 + 14 + 21 + 21 = 104
Team A Points Won minus Points Lost: 115 – 104 = 11
Team B Total Points Won: 10 + 21 + 21 + 21 + 21 + 20 = 114
Team B Total Points Lost: 21 + 15 + 9 + 15 + 12 + 21 = 93
Team B Points Won minus Points Lost: 114 – 93 = 21
Team C Total Points Won: 18 + 15 + 21 + 21 + 21 + 21 = 117
Team C Total Points Lost: 21 + 21 + 15 + 17 + 18 + 20 = 112
Team C Points Won minus Points Lost: 117 – 112 = 5
Therefore team B is ranked 1, team A is ranked 2, and team C is ranked 3. The team ranked 1 is first. The 2nd and 3rd ranked teams will then play one game to 21 points to determine 2nd place in the round robin.
In a 3 way tie for second place, the teams will be ranked 1, 2, and 3 as described. The 2nd and 3rd ranked team will play one game to 21 points to determine who will play the 1st ranked team one game to 21 points which will then determine 2nd place in the round robin.

Play offs |
All play off matches are the best of three games to 21 points. For each category, there are play-off games.
One pool: If there is only one pool in the category, the teams ranked 2 and 3 will play a match for bronze. The winner will play the team ranked 1 for gold and silver (all playoffs will be matches- that is the best 2 of 3 games to 21. The winner of each game must win by 2 points or be the first team to get to 30 points.)
Two pools: At the end of round robin play, the top two finishers in pools A and B for each category (Juvenile, Junior, Intermediate, Senior) will enter the playoff round. First place in pool A will play second place in pool B while first place in pool B will play second place in pool A. The winners will play off for the gold and silver medals while the losers will play off for the bronze (all playoffs will be matches- that is the best 2 of 3 games to 21. The winner of each game must win by 2 points or be the first team to get to 30 points.) |
