High School Basketball Handbook
Membership in the RVSA Junior Varsity and Varsity Basketball leagues is available to all RVSD high schools.

- Eligibility rules are those set forth in the ASAA Handbook and the South Central Zone Handbook.
- A team roster (including birthdays and course load), signed by the principal, must be submitted to the sports coordinator by December 15 for Junior Varsity and January 12 for Varsity.
- A Junior Varsity player may play up to two competitions with his/her school's Varsity team and maintain their Junior Varsity eligibility. If more than two competitions are played, that player is ineligible for further Junior Varsity competition, but may continue to play Varsity. According to ASAA policy, grade 9 athletes are not eligible to play Varsity.

- The RVSA Basketball league holds two annual Coaches’ Organizational meetings:
- Pre-season meeting at the beginning of November.
- Post-season meeting at the end of March.
- A basketball commissioner is approved by the RVSA governing body for a two-year term.
- Participation in the RVSA Basketball league includes Divisional play-offs.
- A school's commitment to the league cannot be changed after October 15.
- A pre-season tournament is held on the last weekend of November. All Junior Varsity teams are committed to attend, unless an exceptional opportunity arises, as agreed upon by the coaches. The final opting out date for the pre-season tournament is October 15.
- The Junior Varsity Boys schedule is a double round robin, played at 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm, mainly on Tuesdays or Wednesday, rotating each year from boys to girls.
- The Junior Varsity Divisional Championships format depends on the number of teams in the league:
- Six teams: A: 6 vs 3, B: 5 vs 4, C: Winner A vs 2, D: Winner B vs 1
Consolation Game: Loser C vs Loser D, Championship Game: Winner C vs Winner D
- Five teams: W: 5 vs 4, X: 3 vs 2, Y: Winner W vs 1
Consolation Game: Loser X vs Loser Y, Championship Game: Winner X vs Winner Y
Teams with the better win/loss record during the regular season host games A and B or W. The remaining games are played at the host school.

- 2012-13 - Bert Church
- 2013-14 - Springbank
- The Varsity league schedule is a double round robin played at 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm. Boys and girls travel together and early and late starts alternate between Junior Varsity and Varsity teams.
- The Varsity Divisional Championship format depends on the number of teams in the league:
- Six teams: A: 6 vs 3, B: 5 vs 4, C: Winner A vs 2, D: Winner B vs 1
Championship Game: Winner C vs Winner D
- Five teams: W: 5 vs 4, X: 3 vs 2, Y: Winner W vs 1
Championship Game: Winner X vs Winner Y
Teams with the better win/loss record during the regular season host games A and B or W. The remaining games are held at the host school.
- The 3A team finishing in last place in the RVSA Divisional play-offs is not eligible to compete at Zone Championships.
- All schools have the right to charge admission for all games, including Divisional Championships, and make passes for immediate families*, to be honoured at all basketball events.
*Free Varsity games for Varsity families, free Junior Varsity games for Junior Varsity families.

Rules and Regulations |
- All games are played according to Federation Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) rules, with modifications according to the ASAA Handbook.
- The RVSA Junior Varsity Boys Basketball league allows a zone press to half-court, man-to-man defense for both boys and girls. A half-court zone trap is permitted.
- ASAA score sheets can be purchased through the Zone secretary and must be used for each league game. Home teams are to phone their scores and fax their score sheets to the statistics coordinator the morning of the next school day.
- League standings are determined on a point basis of two points for a win and zero points for a loss.
- In the event of a tie, the following tie-breaking procedures are used to determine the higher standing:
- Win-loss record between the tied teams
- Points for divided by points against between the tied teams
- Win-loss record between the tied teams and the first place team, or second place team or third place team etc.
- Points for divided by points against between the tied teams and the first place team, or the second place team, or the third place team etc.
- Overall points for vs. overall points against

Facilities and Equipment |
- The designated home team provides a game ball, score sheet, score clock, 30-second clock, team benches and a clean gym floor.
- The designated home team provides space for each team to change and shower.

Minor Officials |
- The designated home team provides three trained score keepers and timers for each game.
- In the absence of a 30-second clock, the home team provides a person at the scorer's table to raise a red flag signifying that 20 seconds of possession has elapsed and to sound the horn should 30 seconds of possession elapse.
- All teams are to train personnel for the jobs they perform.

Major Officials and Their Duties |
- The Calgary Basketball Officials Association (CBOA) schedules officials for Junior Varsity, Varsity and play-offs.
- The officials operate according to NCAA rules unless otherwise instructed by the RVSA Basketball commissioner. Such instructions result only from decisions made by the coaches at the Coaches' Organizational meetings and ratified by the RSVA governing body at a Sports Parameters meeting.
- If an official fails to appear, and the coaches decide to play the game with a non-scheduled referee, that game stands as a league competition.
- The sports coordinator is responsible for scheduling league and play-off officials.

Code of Conduct |
All athletes and parents must sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Athletes and Spectators prior to participating in any exhibition or RVSA event. Coaches must also sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Coaches. Failure to complete the form results in that participant being disqualified from play and may result in his/her team forfeiting points gained while participating with an ineligible participant.

Game Cancellation Procedures |
- In the event of an official school conflict with a scheduled game, the coach must, once conferring with the opposing team's coach, contact the sports coordinator to reschedule the officials. This is to be done at least two weeks in advance to ensure that officials are available.
- In the event that schools choose to postpone a game due to bad weather and/or poor road conditions, the travelling team’s coach must, once conferring with the host team's coach, contact the sports coordinator to cancel the officials and to reschedule the game. If teams cancel games without informing the sports coordinator, they are responsible for paying the officials.

Grievances and Disciplinary Procedures |
- All grievances are dealt with according to the RVSA Appeal Policy - RVSA By-Laws Article XII.
- Players/coaches ejected from a game due to unsportsmanlike and/or flagrant conduct are automatically suspended for the next league or play-off game and receive a disciplinary letter from the commissioner with copies sent to the coach, principal and sports coordinator.
- Any player/coach accumulating two technical fouls during a game is suspended for the next league or play-off game and receives a disciplinary letter from the commissioner, with copies sent to the coach, principal and sports coordinator.

- The RVSD sponsors awards for the Divisional Championship tournament. They include the following:
- First and second-place medallions for Boys and Girls, Junior Varsity and Varsity (15 per team).
- Third-place medallions for Boys and Girls, Junior Varsity (15 per team).
- Divisional Championship trophies for Boys and Girls, Junior Varsity and Varsity teams.
- Divisional Championship banners for Junior Varsity Boys and Girls, Varsity Boys and Girls teams.
- Divisional Championship tournament MVPs and All Stars.
- The RVSA Basketball league holds an annual awards banquet at the same venue as the Divisional Championship tournament host.
- The following awards are presented at the awards banquet:
- Heart Awards: one per team
- All Stars: 12 per category, with every school receiving at least one.
- Most Valuable Player: chosen from team MVPs: one Junior Varsity girl, one Junior Varsity boy, one Varsity girl, one Varsity boy.
- Rookie* of the Year: Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys
- Defensive Player: Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys
- Offensive Player: Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys
*To be eligible for the Rookie of the Year award, a player must be a first-year player in either grade 10 or 11.
- The host school sells banquet tickets. Awards costs are covered by RVSA Basketball plug-in fees.
