Article I Membership
  1. Membership in the RVSA Grade 6 Sports league is available to all RVSD schools with students in grade 6.
  2. Schools that require ineligible players to participate in order to field a team must annually submit a written request to the RVSA at the Sports Parameters meeting.

Article II Eligibility
  1. Eligibility rules are those set forth in the RVSA By-Laws, Article II.
  2. Competitive events include:
    1. Boys and Girls Soccer
    2. Boys and Girls Volleyball
    3. Boys and Girls Basketball

Article III Organization
  1. Participating schools are required to send one representative (athletic director) to the fall and spring middle school sports meetings.
  2. The number of teams a school is entering must be declared by a deadline set by the sports coordinator.
  3. Each school may enter up to two teams for boys and two teams for girls for each sport.
  4. The sports coordinator determines the tournament format based on the number of teams entered.
  5. The sports coordinator is responsible for assigning officials.
  6. These are fun and recreational tournaments focussed on participation and sport development. No records of win/losses are kept.

Article IV Rules and Regulations
  1. The soccer tournament follows Canadian Soccer Association rules with the exception of the Grade 6 Soccer Rule Modifications made by coaches and ratified by the RVSA governing body at a Sports Parameters meeting.
  2. The volleyball tournament follows the rules of Volleyball Canada with the exception of the Grade 6 Volleyball Rule Modifications made by coaches and ratified by the RVSA governing body at a Sports Parameters meeting.
  3. The basketball tournament follows FIBA rules with the exception of the Grade 6 Basketball Rule Modifications made by coaches and ratified by the RVSA governing body at a Sports Parameters meeting.

Article V Facilities and Equipment
  1. The sports coordinator books facilities and community use supervisors.
  2. The soccer tournament is the Monklands Park soccer pitch in Airdrie on the last Friday in May.
  3. The volleyball tournament is an east/west tournament at rotating facilities. A regulation volleyball is used.
  4. The basketball tournament is an east/west tournament at rotating facilities. A size 6 basketball is used.
  5. The host school(s) is responsible for setting up equipment, including nets, standards officials’ stands, players’ benches, score keepers tables etc. 
  6. The host school provides a game ball, but all schools must provide their own practice balls.

Article VI Supervision
  1. The sports coordinator arranges for community use supervision to open the facility and supervise the hallways.
  2. Coaches are responsible for their own team(s).

Article VII Minor Officials
  1. The designated host team provides two mature score keepers and time keepers for each tournament.
  2. Each team provides the necessary line officials for volleyball.
  3. All teams are to train personnel for the jobs they perform.

Article VIII Major Officials and Their Duties

The sports coordinator hires responsible officials for volleyball and soccer tournaments. Carded officials are used for the basketball tournament.

Article IX Code of Conduct

All athletes and parents must sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Athletes and Spectators prior to participating in any exhibition or RVSA event. Coaches must also sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Coaches. Failure to complete the form results in that participant being disqualified from play and may result in his/her team forfeiting points gained while participating with an ineligible participant.

Article X Tournament Cancellation Procedures

In the event that a tournament must be postponed due to bad weather and/or poor road conditions, the sports coordinator informs schools and reschedules officials and facilities. The sports coordinator also contacts each school via phone and email.

Article XI Grievances and Disciplinary Procedures

All grievances are dealt with according to the RVSA Appeal Policy - RVSA By-Laws Article XII.

Article XII Awards
  1. All grade 6 athletes receive participation ribbons for each of the three sports.
  2. Coaches pick up ribbons at the pre-season meeting.
