Jr. A Volleyball Rule Modifications

  1. Follow Canadian Volleyball Association (CVA) rules.
  2. In the best-of-three format, the first two games are played rally point to 25 and the third to 15. There is no cap and teams must win by two points. Forty-five minutes is a guideline only, but try to finish the game within this time frame.
  3. Boys Net Height:  2.245 m    (7'4.5")
  4. Girls Net Height:  2.085 m    (6' 10")
  5. Coaches are permitted to substitute at their preference, with a maximum of 12 substitutions per game. Coaches may substitute for the same position only.
  6. Players should approach the bench on a time out, i.e. leave the court area. There are two one-minute time outs permitted per team per game.
  7. As per CVA regulations, players are permitted to serve anywhere along the baseline.
  8. As per CVA regulations, players are not called on an incidental net violation if they are not involved in the play.
  9. A ball may be played if it crosses the centre line, outside the standard, provided it is played back along a similar path (remaining outside the antennae).
  10. A hand that completely crosses the centre line (from the wrist forward) is in violation. Foot violations are called as per Calgary Volleyball Officials Association rules.
  11. As per CVA regulations, there is one service attempt. The player has eight seconds once the whistle has been blown to serve the ball.
  12. Players are permitted to contact the ball off a serve as they are permitted for any hard-driven attack which would make it legal to momentarily lift or push a hard-driven ball (or in this case, a serve) on the first contact.
  13. There is no warning card.
  14. Yellow card - point and loss of rally.
  15. Red Card - ejection from set.
  16. Yellow and Red Card together - Player or coach is to leave the gym for the remainder of the match.
  17. Delay-of-game calls carry over for the entire match. It is called for “huddles” or cheering that becomes too lengthy in the middle of the court.
  18. As per CVA regulations, the ball may touch the net on the service and still be considered in play.
  19. Coaches are allowed to move on the sidelines, but are not allowed within one meter of the playing surface. They are not allowed in front of the attack line unless calling a time out or substitution and the attack zone is the only area where time outs or substitutions may be requested. Assistant coaches and trainers must remain seated at all times.

General League Rules

  1. The host school should have two copies of the Rule Modifications at the score table, as well as a copy of the league schedule.
  2. Schools attending all tournaments are to provide one person to help score keep and time keep if needed.
  3. Each school is responsible for its own warm-up balls.
  4. The captain is identified with a piece of tape above the number on the front of his/her jersey.
  5. Teams must wear common uniforms (shirt and shorts). Referees are asked to approach a coach with what they consider to be a violation. It is then the coach’s responsibility to amend the violation. This should be done immediately but if this is not possible, it should be done prior to the next scheduled tournament.
  6. No jewellery can be worn by players. Studs may be worn if they are covered by tape. A first offence results in a warning. A second offence results in a time out being charged to the offending team. Players may not wear headwear (this includes caps and bandanas).
  7. Teams must supply properly trained scorekeepers. Linesmen are provided by the playing teams.
  8. Team valuables should not be left in the change areas.
  9. Coaches should make periodic checks of washrooms.
