Article I Membership

Membership in the Rocky View Sports Association Curling league is available to all RVSD schools with students in grades 9 to 12.

Article II Eligibility
  1. Eligibility rules are those set forth in the ASAA Handbook.
  2. The categories for participation are:
    1. High School Boys
    2. High School Girls
    3. High School Mixed
    4. Grade 9
  3. To qualify for the Grade 9 Zone Championships, singles and teams must place first at the RVSA Divisional Championship bonspiel.
  4. To qualify for Zone Championships teams must place first at the Divisional Championship bonspiel. Wildcard spots may become available at the Zone competition, depending upon space. The Grade 9 category is not eligible for Zone Championships.
  5. In the event that first-place finishers cannot attend Zones Championships, the following rules apply:
    1. Teams are replaced by the next highest placed team in the same event.
    2. Only those team members listed as substitutes may be used on a school team.

Article III Organization
  1. A curling commissioner is approved by the RVSA governing body for a two-year term.
  2. By the first week of January, the commissioner and sports coordinator contact schools with details of the Divisional Championship bonspiel and ask for the number of teams each school is entering.
  3. Schools can enter a maximum of three teams in each category, with additional teams (needed to fill the draw) decided by lottery.
  4. Participation in the RVSA Curling league includes the Divisional Championship bonspiel.
  5. The sports coordinator and the commissioner base the bonspiel format on the number of teams entered.
  6. The sports coordinator is responsible for submitting RVSA teams to the Zone host.

Article IV Rules and Regulations
  1. All games are played according to Canadian Curling Association rules as outlined in the ASAA Handbook.
  2. All games are eight ends in duration or the maximum number of games that can be played in the time allotted. With 30 minutes left in the time allotted, a maximum of two ends are to be played.
  3. In the event of a tie, the following is used to determine higher standing
    1. The win/loss record between the tied teams is used to determine first place.
    2. If there is a three-way tie, then points for and against are used to break the tie.
    3. If there is a numerical tie, skip’s rocks are thrown to break the tie, with each skip throwing one rock, under observation of an impartial party.
  4. For Divisional Championship bonspiels, spares are allowed to play as per the discretion of the coach. Spares can be designated at the time of registration and assigned to any team. Once they play on a team, they can only play for that one team. The position of spare must be lead (or second on a mixed team) and teams can only use one spare (two for a mixed team).

Article V Facilities and Equipment
  1. The curling commissioner determines the location of the Divisional Championship bonspiel.
  2. The bonspiel is held in the first two weeks of February.

Article VI Supervision


The coach is responsible for his/her team players.

Article VII Officials and Their Duties


Should one be requested by the teams, the commissioner is to act as a judge and assist with measurements.

Article VIII Code of Conduct

All athletes and parents must sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Athletes and Spectators prior to participating in any exhibition or RVSA event. Coaches must also sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Coaches. Failure to complete the form results in that participant being disqualified from play and may result in his/her team forfeiting points gained while participating with an ineligible participant.

Article IX Team Cancellation Procedures
  1. Once a school has sent in its roster, minor changes can be made up to one week prior to the Divisional Championship bonspiel. These changes should be done by email to the commissioner and the sports coordinator.
  2. Cancelling an entire team from the bonspiel changes the format and the amount of ice needed, therefore all teams must be confirmed no later than three weeks prior to the event.

Article X Grievances and Disciplinary Procedures

All grievances are dealt with according to the RVSA Appeal Policy - RVSA By-Laws Article XII.

Article XI Awards


The RVSD sponsors awards for the Divisional Championship bonspiel. They include the following:

  1. First, second and third-place medallions for all categories.
  2. Divisional Championship banners for all categories.
  3. Trophies for all categories.
