- RVSA Handbook
The RVSA Handbook section on high school basketball was distributed at the meeting and it is posted on the web. There are no changes from last year. However, an eligibility question was raised: Can grade nine athletes play club ball and still be eligible to compete in Zones?
ACTION: JM to look up the Zone ruling and contact Zone secretary Linda Larsen.
RESULT: The South Central Zone handbook states: “To be eligible for school zone basketball competition a Senior High School student is not permitted to play on an outside basketball team during the same season.”
The question then is whether or not the Zone considers our grade nines Senior High School students. The response from the Zone (Linda Larsen) is: “If these players are playing with any grade 10's they are Junior Varsity (Senior High).”
- Technical Foul Rule Modification
MS reviewed the technical foul rule modification, voted in at the Spring Parameters meeting. Here is the motion that was voted in:
“That we abolish the 3 Technical Rule leading to a game ejection currently present in Rocky View and only have game ejections for a coach/player receiving two technicals in a game which is the universal basketball rule.”
MS also stressed that this rule change is in effect on a trial basis and will be evaluated at the end of the 2005-06 season.
John Weiland, from the CBOA, suggested that we need to specify “direct” technical fouls in the ruling.
- JV Pre-season Tournaments
There are no JV pre-season tournaments this year.
- Schedules
Scheduling conflicts were discussed and resolved at the meeting.

Allen Gallup, from Bert Church, updated the group on the status of the Zone tournament venue. Opinions of Rocky View schools are divided with regards to having the Zone tournament at Mount Royal College. Cochrane expressed an interest in hosting the boys tournament. AG to conduct an email vote among coaches when more information is available.
Provincials @ Kate Andrews (Coaldale) March 16-18
- Officials
John Weiland presented the group with three minor rule changes regarding: the clock reset to 15 seconds after an out-of-bounds kick ball; 20 seconds after a fifth foul; head and wrist bands are to be the same colour as uniform. For specific ruling please go to www.cboa.ca
The points of emphasis for the CBOA this year are: principles of play, verticality and rough play. There is no increase in fees this season.
ACTION: Coaches are to send in tournament schedules as soon as possible.
Email complaints and report late officials to John at makethecall@shaw.ca
A Game Evaluation Sheet, similar to one used for RVSA football, was proposed and briefly discussed. The group decided that it wasn’t necessary at this time. If an official feedback channel is deemed necessary after this season then we’ll re-visit the idea of an evaluation form.
- League fees
League fees are $575 per team, a $25 (4.5%) increase over last year. Fees were increased to cover escalating officiating costs the previous two seasons.
