  1. Commissioner

Thanks to Christine Parker, Springbank Middle 242-4456, who will serve as our commissioner this season.

  1. RVSA Handbook

The Middle School Basketball section of the handbook was distributed.

An “unwritten” eligibility rule was brought to the pre-season meeting. The group felt the rule should be included in the handbook.
MOTION: Christine Parker, from Springbank Middle moved that a grade 7 or 8 student who plays one Jr. A league game is no longer eligible to play in the Jr. B league. The motion was seconded by Mike Dow from Muriel Clayton.
MOTION CARRIED: Unanimously in favour.

The use of size 6 balls for Jr. A boys was discussed. To be consistent with community and club teams, the Jr. A boys would need to move up to a size 7 ball. Two arguments against moving up to size 7 balls: extra cost and increased storage space.
MOTION: Mike Dow, from Muriel Clayton, moved that, for the 2007 season, we increase the ball size of Jr. A boys to size 7. Jr. B boys, Jr. A girls and Jr. B girls would stay at size 6.
MOTION CARRIED: In favour: 6, against: 2, abstain: 1.

  1. Jr. A and Jr. B Rule Modifications

Jr. A and Jr. B Rule Modifications were distributed and discussed. Some points were clarified. ACTION: Sports coordinator to update the rule modifications and distribute to coaches and officials.

    1. Jr. A
      1. The seeding tournament consists of 16-minute halves with subsequent games (including play-offs) played with 20-minute halves.
      2. During regular league play overtime consists of one three-minute overtime, played stop-time, with one time-out per team. During Division Championships, the above overtime is repeated until a winner is established.
      3. The host school is to clearly mark the foul line (with tape) one foot closer to the basket. Players may shoot from any position behind that line.
      4. If a school does not have a painted three-point line, the host school is required to mark the line with tape. If it is not marked, no three-point baskets will be counted.
    1. Jr. B
      1. The host school is to clearly mark the foul line (with tape) one foot closer to the basket. Players may shoot from any position from behind that line.

  1. Schedules

Because of the new play-off format (i.e. the top Tier 2 teams will not be moving up to compete for the Tier 1 title) the group decided to play the Division tournament in two days. Therefore, Tuesday, February 28 was taken off the schedule.

Teams will play three games at the seeding tournament and two games at the following two tournaments. Games are scheduled in 60-minute time slots.

The group discussed, and the sports coordinator emphasizes, the dynamic nature of Jr. A basketball. With teams moving in and out of tiers each week, it is impossible to set schedules ahead of time.
ACTION: Sports coordinator will finalize venues and draft and distribute schedules.
