- 2008-09 Season
Coaches discussed their dismay with the principals' vote at the spring Parameters meeting. The feeling was that the coaches already voted Bow Valley's motion down at the coaches meeting and were very surprised to see it, not only come up again at Parameters, but passed by the principals.
Motion: Bruce O'Neil, from Cochrane, moved that football coaches do not support Bow Valley's play-off schedule motion, voted in by principals at the spring Parameters meeting.
Rationale: How do we determine what team from Tier 2 or 3 advances if one of those teams loses out in the first round of play-offs? If it goes back to the regular season record, coaches don't like that because it doesn't allow for the fact that teams improve throughout the season. If there is to be another game to determine who advances then we're looking at a possible mid-week game. Furthermore, the Bow Valley motion shortens the season for some teams. Finally, the Tier 2 regional qualifying game (vs. Okotoks) also needs to be played in the same time period. The coaches feel there are too many "What ifs".
Vote: 4 in favour, 1 against, 1 abstained
Motion: Brian Utley, from Chestermere, moves that we add one regular season game per team to the current schedule format:
Bert Church vs. George McDougall
Cochrane vs. Bow Valley
Springbank vs. Chestermere
Home and home games would be worth one point each.
Rationale: Home and home games (mostly) based on areas will foster rivalries, add a game to a light schedule and raise football profile.
Vote: 4 in favour, 1 against, 1 abstained
Action: JM to determine the forum at which to present these motions to principals in January so that the schedule can be completed in February.
